What is FocusStepper?

FocusStepper is an iPhone app for running focus-bracketing sequences on compatible Sony cameras over Bluetooth. It helps you connect the camera, calibrate focus travel, set your step size and timing, and repeat the same bracket workflow more reliably.

What are compatible Sony cameras?

FocusStepper is built for Sony cameras that expose the Bluetooth remote-control behavior the app relies on. Compatibility depends on the exact camera model, firmware version, and sometimes regional variations. In practice, cameras that support Sony's Bluetooth remote-control workflow and can be discovered and connected by the app are the ones that should work. Cameras without Bluetooth remote control support are not compatible.

Which camera and lens combinations have been tested so far?

So far, FocusStepper has only been tested with a Sony A7C together with a Tamron 28-200 and a Tamron 17-28. More camera and lens combinations may be tested later when the opportunity is there, and a future version of the app may also include a way for users to submit confirmed working models.

Do I need to update my camera firmware?

Yes, that is recommended. If your camera supports Bluetooth remote control, keeping the firmware up to date is the best way to avoid connection or control issues.

Do I need an internet connection while shooting?

No. The core camera-control and focus-bracketing workflow runs locally between your iPhone and camera over Bluetooth. Internet is only relevant for things like the website or App Store subscription management.

Can I use FocusStepper without a subscription?

Yes. The free tier covers connection, focus checks, calibration, and capped bracket runs. Premium removes shot caps and unlocks saved setups, focus profiles, and session review.

How do subscriptions work?

FocusStepper offers optional auto-renewable subscriptions through the App Store. Apple handles billing, renewals, cancellations, and payment details. If you already subscribed and switch devices, you can use restore purchases inside the app.

Can I save my bracket settings?

Yes. Premium unlocks saved setups and focus profiles so you can reuse lens calibration values and bracket settings later instead of starting from scratch every time.
